Back on Track with Smoothies & Broth

Camping, hiking, boating, barbecues, parties, weddings…the list of summertime activities goes on and on. We tend to let our hair down so to speak at these various occasions, soaking up the sun, the connections, and perhaps consuming more sugar than usual! While this is perfectly normal…we want to be able to enjoy in-the-moment, you might find it difficult to get back on track.

Your digestive system might feel a little outta sorts and perhaps you feel slightly bloated not to mention your lack of energy. While you want to start eating clean, you might find yourself craving the cake that your tried over the weekend. There is actually an interesting process that happens with the latter that is connected with your dopamine receptors. You might have heard that dopamine is the feel-good neurotransmitter that gives you that feeling of pleasure, focus, and motivation. The interesting thing is that when we overstimulate our system with dopamine, it actually causes some of our dopamine receptor sites to shut down and we end up craving more of whatever gives us that ‘high.’ There are several factors that can contribute to this shift but two common ones seen in today’s society are playing video games & sugar! 

See the connection? How interesting, right?!?! If you’ve been going to lots of events this summer and eating more sugar (remember that breads, pastas, crackers, cookies, etc. are all essentially sugar once broken down in the body) than usual, you might find it helpful to reset your dopamine receptors and taste buds and give your digestive system a rest!

A couple weeks ago, I found myself craving a little reset as I had really become too comfortable with snacking throughout the day, especially the afternoon and craving more sweets than usual. I also wanted to give my digestive system a little break. Here’s what my 3-Day Reset looked like: I decided to drink fresh smoothies and bone broth for the first day. The next couple of days I decided to add in one afternoon meal that was primarily veggies and quality protein and some healthy fats. In three days, I was feeling much better and was back on track to eating clean and feeling satisfied with the basics!

Smoothies and bone broth are great because your digestive system doesn’t have to work to break down your food to get the nutrients so it essentially gives the system a chance to recover. Next, both smoothies and broth deliver tons of nutrients at once! It’s a win, win…you’re resting your system, while also revitalizing it!

While you can make your own bone broth at home, I recently found a company in the Highlands, called Western Daughters Butcher Shoppe that sells grass-fed broth. Quality bone broths contain minerals in forms that your body can easily absorb: calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, sulphur and others. In addition, the gelatin specifically has profound benefits.
