Planning & Dressing for Success

There are so many famous quotes around the importance of planning: “Failing to plan is planning to fail” and ” Success doesn’t just happen. It’s planned for.”

While I’m all about living in the present moment, when we’re talking about upgrading to a healthier, happier lifestyle, planning is essential. Proper nutrition and exercise (as well as other factors that contribute to your level of well-being like career, relationships, etc.) take planning and action!

There can be many reasons for lack of planning and taking action. It requires energy, forethought, motivation, clarity and so on. Often times, we hear so many contradicting message about what we SHOULD and SHOULD NOT do to improve our health that it gets down right confusing! Gluten is bad. Eat whole grains. Coffee is good. Coffee is bad. Eat fruit. Don’t eat fruit, there’s too much sugar. Do cardio. To build muscle, don’t do cardio. Lift heavy. Lift light weights. Do more reps. Less reps is better. It is ENDLESS and EXHAUSTING.

Where to go…what to do??!!?? First, take charge. Don’t just listen to someone else without being very clear about what your personal goals are. Be responsible for you. What are your goals?  Know your goals first, then get support. Find the right fit. Someone (or a team) who actively listens and provides you with knowledge and makes a plan with you. Remember, to really make a long-term change, you have to have long-term follow through. It can’t be just another diet or trial with a certain training program. In this, you’re listening to your body and your inner guide. That way, you make modifications as needed and work with your support team to really find the best nutrition protocol and exercise regimen for you! With regards to exercise, do what you love. What feels good in your body. Yes, you should get a good burn and shake a few days a week, but it still has to be something you love. Also, change your routine. Keep your body & specifically your muscles guessing and your mind engaged. This is part of the reason I love teaching and taking classes with Xtend Barre – classes are fun, yet super challenging (feel the burrrrn and the shaaake…mind over matter) and always changing.

With these things in mind, here are some ideas for a mini salad bar and a couple of homemade dressings inspired by the Everyday Detox cookbook by Megan Gilmore…a favorite go-to for simple, yummy, and easy-to-digest recipes!

Salad bar prep: wash, rinse and allow time for all veggies to dry. Choose your favorite veggies and go for local and organic if possible. This week, I included romaine, kale, green onions, peppers, cucumbers and beets in the mix. All of these are wonderful for fighting inflammation and naturally helping the body detoxify!

Honey Mustard Vinaigrette

1/4 c. honey mustard (I used Annie’s)
2 T. raw apple cider vinegar
1/8 c. extra virgin olive oil
1/2 c. water (less if you want a thicker consistency)
1 T. raw honey
1 garlic clove

Place all ingredients into a high-speed blender (like the Vitamix) and blend until smooth.

Basil Vinaigrette

3 T. raw apple cider vinegar
1/4 c. fresh basil leaves, tightly packed
3 T. extra virginal olive oil
5 T. water
2 T. honey mustard
2 garlic cloves
1 T. raw honey

Place all ingredients into a high-speed blender (like the Vitamix) and blend until smooth.

Planning and dressing for success…yes, I mean properly dressing your salads! Hah, only a health coach would create this title with intentions of providing you with new salad dressing recipes!
